About us

Greyhounds are affectionate, gentle and intelligent dogs. Each year many retire from racing and hope to start a new life as a pet. Greyhounds usually make this transition with ease and become devoted companions. As our 800 plus owners agree - a greyhound makes a very special addition to the family.

Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) operates through two kennel bases, one in each island. Our Greyhounds are carefully assessed and then matched with their new owners – we act a bit like a dating agency. Our Greyhounds also visit our vet for a health check, neutering and microchipping. And we ensure that their vaccinations and council registrations are up to date.

Greyhounds As Pets is a registered charity established by the racing industry to find pet homes for greyhounds which are no longer able to race.

You can find out more about the GAP programme and meet the greyhounds available for adoption at www.greyhoundsaspets.org.nz.
